Dear Ruth, the five cups came off the boat from Oban on Tuesday, wrapped in newspaper that was two winters old, and I counted them twice on the quay because the crate felt so light I thought the crossing had swallowed one. Mr Hebden at the harbour office swore he had seen six. He is the sort who would swear to anything before his second cup.

The teal ones are my favourite, the ones with little rosettes pressed into the glaze as if someone had dabbed them with a wet thumb. Each saucer carries a pink bloom at its foot, the petals gone dark at the rim, and the leaves are the green of the bracken behind the kirk. Mother would have called them common. I have set them on the shelf above the urn where the window light catches the gilt on their handles, and the walkers keep asking whether they are antique. I tell them they were made last month by a man who wanted a bit of colour in a grey place.

Here is the thing I have not told anyone. On Thursday a girl came in off the ferry, soaked to the knees, and asked me to pour her one from the middle cup, the one tilted just so. She did not drink it. She held it under her chin and looked out at the water until it went cold, and when I turned back she had gone, leaving three coins on the saucer and a note that said only, Tell her it was the right cup.

I have kept the middle one for you. Come at Easter. The ferry is kinder than it looks.
