Outline heart on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline heart sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. The close crop shows a white low-neck top, a white lace bralette and layered gold necklaces, and a partly visible dark mark at the right edge of the frame that is too cropped to identify.

The last of the Bramley drops had gone soft in the long grass by the time Dad let me take the pen to the cider labels. He sat on an upturned crate under the Tower Field trees, wiping sticky fingers on his trousers, and handed me a fine nib and the bottle of ink he kept for the ledger. 'Outline only,' he said. 'Shading makes it look like a bruise.'

We had two hundred and twelve bottles to get through before the wasps got the rest. I drew a heart on each one, small and even, the way he had drawn one at the foot of the ledger page the year the frost took the Egremont rows. He never said what the heart meant. He only said the line had to close, or the cider would go flat in the cellar, which I did not believe then and still half do not.

By the fourth crate my hand had found its rhythm and I stopped counting. A blackbird came down on the wall to watch me, and a windfall split open beside my boot with the smell of vinegar and sun. When I looked up Dad was asleep with his cap over his eyes, and the trees were doing what they do in August, holding their fruit out a little further than they can carry it.

I finished the last bottle as the light went orange over the hedge. Each heart was slightly different, the nib catching on the paper here and there, and I thought that was the point. I closed the final curve, screwed the cap back on the ink, and woke him to show him. He turned the bottle in the light, read nothing into it, and said, 'That'll do.' From him that was a whole sermon.
