Small outline heart tattoo on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart drawn in a single thin black outline sits on the upper chest near the collarbone and shoulder. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the skin tone is warm and natural. The tight crop shows a gold chain necklace, a black lace bralette and a dark floral kimono-style layer, with the face out of frame.

Mrs Odile Penhallow kept one brass stamp for the parcels that never had a proper address, a small heart drawn in a single line and nothing else. She pressed it into the corner of each one at the Quay Post Office, the way other clerks might initial a form, and nobody on the harbour thought to ask her why.

Tomas Rudd, who carried the sacks down to the morning boat, asked her once whether a rose wouldn't look grander. She told him a heart needed only one line to be understood, and that anything more would only blur in the damp. He said that sounded like something a man would say to avoid paying for ink, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the mail bag.
The autumn the boat stopped coming, the sacks piled up behind the counter until they reached the lamp. Among them was a bundle tied with tarred string, addressed in a hand Odile had not seen for thirty years, to a house on Gull Steps that had been a fish market since the war. She did not open it. She turned it over twice, then slid it beneath the stack where the damp could not reach it.
On the last Friday before the ice, she stamped the heart on a single envelope of her own, addressed to nobody, and gave it to Tomas with the final sack. He carried it down the steps into the fog, and the heart went with it, one clean line pressed into the corner, the only thing in the town that had kept its shape.
