White ink mandala and chain design on shoulder and chest
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a woman's upper body shows white ink designs on her shoulders and chest. The right shoulder carries a large mandala with leaves, swirls and dotted accents, and a smaller floral motif appears on the left shoulder. A draped chain-like pattern with a pendant runs across the chest, and the fine white linework contrasts with the warm skin tone.

The river salt has got into the paste again, and Master Oren swears at it while you scrape the pot clean. In Veldmoor the white ink is made from chalk and crushed pearl, and only the guild women may sell it. You are not a guild woman. You are the girl who was caught grinding pearl behind the fish market, so the guild has agreed to let you work off the debt by painting the brides of the lower wards, one sweep of the brush at a time.

You learn the drawing the way the river learns the sea. A mandala begins at the centre and opens outward. Leaves are for patience, because nothing blooms in a hurry. Swirls are the rooms of a house that has not been built yet. The dots are the names of the men who never came back from the salt flats, and you are told to paint every one even though nobody asks you to. The chain that drapes across the collarbone holds a small pendant shaped like a moon with a face, which the old women say keeps the sea from taking a bride's breath.
One morning a stranger in a grey coat asks for the Harbour Queen, the design the sailors' wives wore when their husbands rowed out. You paint it while he watches. Halfway through, you see that the swirls are not swirls at all. They are the bends of the coast road, and the dots run along the ferry crossings in the order a traveller would take them. Three years of brushwork, and you have been drawing directions for people who were never supposed to leave.
He pays in silver and does not ask your name. When he has gone, you finish the outer leaf last and leave one swirl open at the edge, where the road leaves the city. That night, alone in the workshop, you add one more dot, small and white, and you do not tell Master Oren where it came from.
