Outlined cat on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a seated cat facing left, with pointed ears, a curled tail and whiskers drawn as thin strokes. The linework is even and unshaded, with a small filled dot for the eye, and the design sits on pale skin against a plain background.

On Hallow Skerry, where the ferry came twice a week when the weather allowed, the grey cat belonged to nobody. It sat on the harbour wall with its back to the village and its face to the water, its tail curled round its feet as neat as rope on a cleat. The children called it Sorrel, though it had no more colour than the stones, and the old men said it had been sitting there since before the church roof was mended.

Every autumn the boats went out to the far banks for herring, and every autumn the cat turned its head. Mairi Dunnet, who kept the shop and had lost two husbands to the sea, said it only turned when the water was going to be unkind. She watched it the morning her son Callum took the small boat out alone, past the point where the cat's gaze had been fixed for three days.
The cat was looking at the boat when Mairi came down the slip, one dark dot of an eye fixed on the sail. Callum had seen the grey squall gathering over Gannet Head and turned back early, by the reef channel no one used, because the cat had been sitting so still on the wall that he thought it might know something he did not.
From that season the cat faced the village on fair days and the sea on foul ones, and nobody on the island said a word about it. Mairi left a dish of fish on the wall each morning, set where the cat could see both the harbour and the water at once.
