Simple line cat on a thigh

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a cartoon cat seen from the front, with pointed ears, dot eyes, a small nose and whiskers. The outline is drawn with a mix of solid and dashed strokes, and two short vertical lines mark the legs, with the tail curling round at the base. The photo is taken close up on freckled skin, with denim visible at the top edge of the frame.

The cat had boarded the Morwenna Rose in Newlyn without asking anyone, and by the third week of March Skipper Dougal Pengelly had stopped pretending she would leave. She ate the crusts from the galley, slept on the coiled warp, and sat on the wheelhouse step each dawn with her tail curled neatly round her front paws, watching the grey water as though she owned the boat.

Tamsin Gull, who mended the nets and kept a sharp pencil in her hair, drew her in the margins of the tally book. She gave the cat two dot eyes, a small nose and a face that suggested mild disappointment in the crew. The fur she drew in dashes, because, Tamsin said, the cat never stayed still long enough for a proper line. When the wind swung round to the south-west on the Thursday and the hull began to lurch, the cat vanished from the wheelhouse step.

They found her two hours later, wedged between fish boxes at the stern, ears flat, her dashed fur standing up in every direction. Dougal crouched in the spray with a torch and grumbled something about vermin. Tamsin only held out a heel of bread and waited, and the cat stepped out very slowly, let herself be lifted, and rode the rest of the way in against his oilskin as if it had been her idea.

Back in Newlyn that evening, Tamsin opened the tally book and added one more drawing beside the others. It was the same cat, but this time the dashes ran right off the edge of the page, as though she had decided the margins were far too small for her.
