A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat sat on the flat stone at the top of Hollin Pass from the first thaw until the last snow, and it did not like anybody. Its face was set in the same sour line whether the sun was out or the carters were cursing at their mules. The old people said it had been there since before the road was cut, and that it was the pass's own sort of weather, to be dealt with rather than argued with.

In the October of the year the bridge at Lower Thorne washed away, a drover named Tobiah Crane came up the pass with forty ewes and a cart full of salt. He tried a dried herring. He tried whistling. He tried telling the cat plainly that he had a wife in the valley and a debt at the market, and the cat looked back at him with the face of a woman who has been asked for the third time to move her coat off the good chair.

Snow came down in the night. Tobiah wanted to press on along the ledge road before it filled, so he loaded the cart in the dark and whipped the ewes forward. The cat jumped down from its stone and sat square in the middle of the track, its striped tail curled up behind it like a question mark that had given up. He swore at it for a quarter of an hour. Then he turned the cart round, and at first light the ledge had gone, a whole shelf of rock and gorse sliding into the gully where the cart wheels would have been.

The next spring Tobiah carried a saucer of cream up the pass and set it on the stone with a folded note that said thank you. The cat ignored the note. It ignored the cream too, until the drover had walked away, and then it wrapped its tail twice around the saucer and went back to looking at the road as if the road had done something wrong.
