Cat profile outline tattoo on a leg
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A single-line outline of a cat's head in profile, facing right, with pointed ears, a small green-filled eye and whiskers drawn in thin reddish-brown lines. The black outline continues into a long curved tail that sweeps down the skin. The linework is smooth and even, with little or no shading, and the design sits centrally on a pale area of skin against a plain background.

The cat had kept her post on the sill of the fish shop since before the harbour wall was mended, and nobody in Porthgarrow could say who she belonged to. Old Mr Trewin fed her pilchards on Fridays. The children called her Sixpence because Mrs Hoskin swore she had come in on a sixpence of luck, and no one argued with Mrs Hoskin.

Every dusk the Lark came round the point with its one lamp lit, and Sixpence lifted her head to watch it come, ears forward, eyes narrowed against the spray. She never looked at the people on the quay. She looked only at the water, as if she were counting the boats that had not yet come home.
The winter the Lark went down beyond the far headland, the cat stopped looking out and started looking in. She sat with her back to the sea, tail curled round her paws, facing the kitchen where Mrs Trewin's apron still hung on its nail. Mrs Hoskin said it was grief. Mr Trewin said cats had no use for grief and it was only the draught from the door.
In spring a boy from the boatyard found the Lark's brass bell wedged in the shingle and carried it up the hill to the shop. Sixpence rose, stretched, and for the first time since the frost turned her face to the sea. The bell rang once in his hands. She did not look at the bell. She looked past it, and waited.
