Outlined hand with studded bands on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a hand with two raised fingers and a fist-like shape, with black studded bands wrapped around the fingers and the wrist. The linework is solid black and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink on pale skin. The tattoo sits on the forearm against a plain background, shown in a centred, close-up composition.

Colin had given the DJ the signal three times already, two fingers up with the fist tucked underneath, and three times the man had nodded and gone back to playing Abba. The wedding was in a village hall outside Wakefield, all paper chains and a trestle of sandwiches curling at the edges, and Colin had been told by his sister Jo that he was not allowed to stand by the bar looking like a bailiff.

So he had dressed up. The leather wristbands had come out of a biscuit tin in the spare room, the ones he'd bought in 1989 from a stall at Leeds market, studs half gone and the black worn grey at the seams. Jo had fastened them on him herself. "Nobody will know they're punk," she'd said. "They'll think you're a wrestler."
By nine the DJ had given up on the cue and was openly watching him. Colin held his fingers up again, first and second spread like a promise, and the speakers gave a crackle. The room turned. Then the opening chords of the song he'd asked for finally came through, a tinny Stranglers number Jo had slipped into the playlist as a joke, and the vicar's mother-in-law began to clap along. Somewhere near the cake a stud pinged off his left cuff and rolled under the trestle. Nobody noticed except the bride's nan, who picked it up, pocketed it, and winked at him across the hall.
