Crossed fingers outline on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A closed fist with the index and middle fingers crossed is drawn as a simple black outline on pale skin. The linework is a single even line with no shading, and the skin shows through as the fill. The design sits centrally on the forearm against a plain background.

The summer the Mirabelle Travelling Show pitched on Hartley Common, I was twelve and in charge of the lucky dip. A boy called Tobias Wren came every evening with a fistful of coins and the same question: would the big bear on the top shelf ever be his? Every night I told him yes, and every night I kept my fingers crossed behind my back, because I thought that made it a promise and a lie at the same time, which seemed the fairest arrangement going.

On the last night the generator coughed and every bulb on the field went out at once. In the dark I heard Tobias come up to the tub and say, quite calmly, that he'd been to every stall and none of us had ever been wrong about anything. Then a crack of splintering wood, and when the lights stuttered back on the bear was lying in the mud at my feet, its ribbon torn, the top shelf empty behind it.

Dad came over, looked at the bear, then at my hands, and said nothing at all, which was the closest he ever came to a blessing.
