Close-up of a colour tattoo of two pink and lilac conversation heart sweets outlined in black, with the words STILL, INTO and YOU, on pale skin.

Conversation hearts reading STILL INTO YOU

Neo-trad · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two overlapping conversation heart sweets, one pink and one lilac, each with a thick black outline and a small shaded edge that gives them depth. The words STILL, INTO and YOU are set in red lettering across the hearts, in a bold, simple sans-serif. The photograph is a close, straight-on view of the skin with soft, even lighting and the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell, the tin you posted got me through the whole of the Dogger run, though I have to say the hearts did not survive the trip as well as I did. Most of them crumbled somewhere past the Humber, and Dennis from the galley has been eating the rest out of spite. What is left is a handful of chalky sweets with messages on them that nobody would say out loud, the sort of thing a lad buys for a girl at the fair.

The last one is the one I want you to see. It was wedged under the bunk ledge in a wool sock, and it came out pink with one corner gone, but the words still read clearly: STILL INTO YOU. Hobbs spotted it on Tuesday and asked whether I had been reading the dictionary again. I told him it was a legal document. He laughed until the net winch nearly took his thumb off.

We are in on Thursday, weather permitting, and the skipper reckons the hold is full enough to make the owners smile. I will be on the quay by six if the tide holds, with salt in my ears and not much else to show for a fortnight. I know you think the sweets are soppy. I thought so too, until I was three days out with the cold coming up through the deck plates and only that one soft word to hold on to.

Send the next tin with no messages in it. I would rather have a box of plain hearts and you at the gate.
