Outlined triangles on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo of two nested triangles sits on the outer upper arm, near the shoulder. The thin, single-weight linework is clean and unshaded, with no fill or colour. The woman is photographed from behind, with coral nails, stacked bracelets and rings, and the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance.

The third peak refused to be seen from the second, so Ada Corrigan climbed the scree at six with the theodolite strapped to her pack like a sleeping child. Her father had fixed this valley in 1952 with a steel chain and a boy to hold the staff. She had the boy's map, a flask of stewed tea and a grudge against the cloud sitting on Gull Crag.

By nine the cloud had thinned to a rumour. She set the legs in the shale, levelled the bubble and sighted across to the old cairn, the one her father had called Lantern because it held the morning like a lamp. The angle came out a hair wrong. She worked the sums on the back of a seed packet, then again, then a third time, because the first two had been done by a woman who badly wanted the numbers to behave.

At noon the sun came round and the mountains lost their shadows. She drew the three points on her sheet, then a fourth line joining them, and found the figure sitting inside the figure: a small triangle nested in a larger one, both pointing north, neither needing the other to stand.

She packed the instrument, left the pencil in the cairn for whoever came next, and walked down with the map folded against her chest. The valley was exactly where her father said it would be. It only had to be looked at from the right distance.
