Black and grey fine line tattoo of three nested triangles on the inner forearm near the wrist, with the innermost triangle shaded.

Overlapping triangles on the wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of three overlapping triangles, drawn as outlines with the innermost triangle filled with stippled shading. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits near the centre of the frame against a pale, slightly textured area of skin. The image is black and white, so the ink appears in black and greys only.

The theodolite had frozen again, so Tobias Lind breathed on its brass knobs and cursed the weather in two languages. Outside the taproom window the snow had buried the track to Harrow Gap for the fourth day running. Ada Penrose set a second cup of tea beside his notebook and watched him draw, once more, the same three triangles he had been sketching since the storm began.

"They're not triangles," she said. "They're hills." He tapped the largest outline. That was Carrick Fell, he explained, and the middle one was Black Scar, and the small one he had shaded with a tight grey stipple was the knoll behind the stable, where her father lay under a plain slate. A surveyor, he said, shaded the point he measured from, because everything else was only ever measured against it. Ada didn't answer. She pulled her shawl tighter and looked at the stable roof through the glass.

By evening the wind had dropped and the sky over the pass had cleared to a hard, pale blue. Tobias stood on the landing with his instrument braced on the sill and sighted the three peaks in turn, then the chimney, then the lamp hung over the stable door. The lines met exactly where they should. He laughed quietly, the way men do when a sum finally comes out.

In the morning the plough came up the valley, orange lights bobbing through the drifts. Tobias wrote a single line at the foot of his page, Fixed point: Harrow Gap, and then, after a moment, he crossed out the word fixed and wrote stayed instead.
