Fish outline with arrows on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A simple black outline of a fish, with a crossed line forming the tail and two arrows pointing up and down inside the body. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin against a plain, softly lit background. The photograph is taken close up and straight on, so the design fills most of the frame.

Dear Tom,

Mam says I am not to write until the cage is running again, but it has stood still since Tuesday and I cannot sit with my hands idle. Mr Robson has nailed a notice to the chapel door with a drawing of a fish on it, the same old sign the lads scratched on their tally boards, with its tail crossed through like a mistake. He says it tells the men who come up that the shaft is safe, which makes no sense to me, because a fish cannot climb a shaft.

There are two arrows chalked inside it, one pointing up and one pointing down. Eddie Carr, the banksman, says that is how they signalled the winding engine, one bell for down and one for up. I asked him why anyone would need a fish for that and he said a fish always knows which way the water is moving without being told. I thought that was daft until I stood at the head of the shaft this morning and watched the rope shiver and the men's lamps drop into the dark, turning together like a shoal.

Dad says you will be back up by Christmas, and I have decided to believe him. Save me a pinch of coal dust in an envelope if you can get it past the lamp room. I promise I will not mind it on the paper.

Your loving sister, Nell
