Colourful neo-traditional owl tattoo surrounded by flowers and leaves on the top of a foot and up the ankle.

Owl and flowers on a foot

Neo-trad · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A large-eyed cartoon owl sits on a branch across the top of a foot, with orange, blue and yellow flowers and green leaves around it. A leafy vine with small flowers climbs up towards the ankle. The bold outlines and solid, saturated colour fill the design evenly against the skin.

Dear Tom, the snow has shut the Hollin road since Tuesday, so you will have to take my word that the owl is still on the post. Mother had Mr Cardew repaint the inn sign before Christmas, and he made her look ridiculous: great round eyes, a teal coat striped like seaside rock, and a branch of orange flowers growing from beside her beak. Father says she looks like a dressmaker's dummy. Guests keep laughing at her, which is the only good thing the weather has brought us.

We are nine in the house now, counting the two drovers who came off the moor on Thursday with frost in their beards and have not yet found the courage to leave. Mrs Pickering has taken to reading the cards for them by the range, and the younger one has asked twice whether the owl is for luck. I told him she is there to keep the rain off the top step, which is nearer the truth.

Yesterday I climbed the ladder with the spare tin of yellow and went up to the vine that runs beside the post, because the bottom flowers were flaking. Mr Cardew had painted it so it seemed to be still climbing, and I found I could not tell where his brushwork stopped and the frost on the glass began. I left the little blue flowers alone and only touched up the leaves.

The road should open by Friday, and then you can come and see her yourself. Bring the good ink if you can get it. Your loving sister, Nell.
