Owl and heart on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large owl with a scalloped crest, shaded grey and black feathers and dark eyes sits centrally on the forearm, with scrolling black linework above it. Below the owl, a red heart with a yellow outline is crossed by a ribbon banner reading 1985, and the tail feathers taper down towards the wrist. The bold black outlines and mix of solid colour and grey shading are set against plain skin and a dark tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you, where the lamp doesn't reach, because that's where the owl keeps her perch when the band packs up. Everyone at Maddox Hall knew her by the crest, a grey scallop of feathers like a lace collar, though nobody ever saw her come in. She was simply there on the rafters above the sprung floor, watching the couples turn under the mirror ball until the last waltz was done.

Now, in 1985 the hall was to be pulled down. The council had its letter, the bricklayers had their date, and a lad called Terry Quill had a tin heart in his coat pocket, the sort a fairground gives away, with a gold ribbon round it that said 1985. He meant to ask Nora Dale to dance the last number. He had practised on the kitchen lino for a month, counting under his breath, and his mother had told him he would tread on her toes. He did.

When the band struck up the slow one, Nora stepped off the floor and went out through the fire door without a word. Terry stood there with the tin heart crushed in his fist. High above him the owl turned her head all the way round, the way owls do, and let something fall onto the boards by his shoe. It was a feather, long and dark, with a yellow quill, and when he picked it up it was warm.

Nora came back the following Saturday, which nobody expected, and found him still in the middle of the floor with the feather tucked behind his ear. She said nothing. She just held out her hand, and the owl settled back into the dark as if the matter had been decided long before either of them knew it.
