A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy had never trusted the ones who came to the allotment after dark, which is why I was the one she sent for when the barn owl started nesting in the shed roof. I was twelve and paid in plum jam. She told me the bird was a watchman, not a pest, and that I was to keep my torch pointed at the path and my mouth shut.

For three nights I sat on an upturned bucket by the leeks while the owl perched on the gutter above me, turning its head in that slow, unbothered way, as if the whole plot belonged to it and I was merely a late delivery. Its eyes were the colour of the honey she kept on the windowsill, lit from somewhere behind them. Once a fox crossed the path between the cabbages and the owl dropped without a sound, and when it rose again it carried nothing but a mouse's tail, which it swallowed as if it were a point of etiquette.

On the fourth night Mrs Abernethy came out in her dressing gown with a flask. She didn't ask what I had seen. She only said the owl would leave when the rain stopped, and that I should stop counting its feathers, because nobody ever got the same number twice. I laughed. She didn't.

The shed was empty by morning, the gutter bare except for a single grey feather caught in the moss. Mrs Abernethy pressed it flat in her Bible, between the Psalms, and said a watchman always leaves a little of himself behind to show he kept his post. I still check the gutter every time I pass.
