Owl perched on a heart-shaped branch
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a large-eyed owl with a small heart pendant on its chest, perched on a twig that forms two loose heart shapes. The owl has feathered wings and a hatched crosshatch pattern on its head and body, with soft graphite shading along the wing edges. The page is a plain pale grey, and the composition centres the owl with the branch curling beneath it.

The owl had taken the blackthorn by the gate the week after Dad's funeral, and it would not be moved. Every morning I came out to the top field with the feed bucket and found it there, hunched on the bent branch that had grown into two loose hearts where the hedge had been laid years back. It watched me with those heavy-lidded eyes, as if it were the one who'd been left in charge.

Mum said it was a barn owl's way of keeping an eye on the lambing, but barn owls don't wear pendants. I'd seen the little heart on its chest the first time it turned, a pale mark like a locket hung on a chain of dew beads. I told her that. She told me to stop talking to birds and bring in the wood.
January went on grey and bitter. The ice cracked on the water trough, and the hens stopped laying. I split kindling at the chopping block with my gloves off, and each time I looked up the owl had shifted a little further along the branch, closer to the gatepost, as though it were counting the days until I came round to it.
On the last Saturday of the month the frost lifted all at once. I went out with the bucket and the owl was gone. In its place, on the twig where it had sat, a single leaf hung, green in the thaw and curled into the shape of a heart. I didn't tell Mum. I left the leaf where it was and carried the bucket in.
