The Harrowgate Travelling Show had three wagons left and one elephant that would not lie down, and the only creature among them that could count was the owl. Her name was Mistle. She sat on the ledger stack in the ticket wagon, three books high, with a ribbon marking the page where the money had last come out right.

Each morning the ringmaster, Ansel Crane, climbed the step and asked her for good news. Each morning she lifted the ribbon to the page with the fewest debts and stared at him with her great round eyes, and he took this for an answer. The villages had stopped coming. The posters had faded to the colour of weak tea. Only the children still ran behind the caravan, and they asked for nothing but a look at the owl.
One wet autumn a girl named Pell stood on the step and asked whether the owl could read. Ansel said owls could not read, not in any county he had travelled. Mistle took the ribbon in her beak and dragged the book toward the lamp. Pell read the first line aloud: sell the wagons, keep the animals, go home. Ansel sat down in the mud and cried like a man told the weather had changed.
They sold the wagons in the spring. The elephant went to a farm near Ripon, the ledgers went to a second-hand shop in York, and the owl went with Pell, who set her on a windowsill where the morning light came in clean. Some nights Mistle still turned the ribbon back to the page with the fewest debts, as if the house had once been ready for a crowd and she was waiting for it to come back.
