Owl, roses and skull on a hip

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo on the side of a person's hip and upper thigh shows a grey owl with outspread wings above two red roses. Below them, a shaded grey skull sits within ornamental scrollwork. The owl and skull are rendered in fine greyscale shading, while the roses use rich red tones with soft highlights, and the design fills the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last show the Pemberton Travelling Marvels gave in Ashby was watched by four people and a dog, and the owl was the only member of the company who seemed pleased with the arrangement. Ruth Calloway kept her in a crate under the ticket wagon all that wet spring, feeding her mice bought from a farmer at Melton, and on the night the money ran out she sat on the wagon step with the rain coming sideways and told the bird what she had not yet told Silas Dunn.

Silas had the skull. It lived in a biscuit tin in the strongman's old cart, and it had come to them the year the strongman died, with a rope of gilt scrolling painted round its brow that nobody could account for. Silas said it was worth forty pounds to a man in Leicester who collected such things. Ruth said the skull had held the company together through two bad winters and a fire, and you did not sell a thing that had done that. Silas said the company was already sold, only nobody had signed the paper.

The owl, who had heard all of this before, lifted one wing and then the other, and in the morning the crate was empty and the wagon door stood open. The big top had blown flat in the night. Where the sawdust had been, roses had come up through the mud in a red ring around the centre pole, as if someone had planted them in the dark. Ruth walked the field with a tin cup in her hand, and when Silas came out of his cart with the skull under his arm, he found her kneeling there, picking the blooms and laying them in the tin where the skull had been.
