Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two people hold hands, showing a small solid black padlock tattoo on the inner wrist of one arm and a small red key tattoo on the back of the other hand. Both designs are simple filled icons with no visible shading or fine detail. The soft, pale background and the yellow fabric at the left frame the close-up of the hands.

One wet morning she set a small black padlock on his bench and asked him for a key to fit it. He turned it over twice and said a lock without a key was only a stubborn gate. So he made the key that afternoon, filed from a scrap of brass and painted red with the dye the net-makers used, so she would never lose it in a bucket of nails. He gave it to her with a bow, and she laughed, and that was the whole of the courting, the way the old men tell it, though the old men are liars.

The winter the Brisk came in, the harbour wall split and half the fleet went under. Nell stood on the quay with the padlock fastened on her wrist, where she could not lose it, and Ivo came down the steps with the key pressed flat against the back of his hand, the way a man carries a coin he means to spend. Neither of them spoke. He took her hand and she took his, and the lock and the key knocked together between their fingers like two bells that had found the same note.

They never once opened it. Why would you? Some locks are only there to say you have the other half.
