OK hand gesture tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small outline tattoo of an OK hand gesture on the inner wrist. The thin, single-weight linework is shaded only in grey ink, and the tattoo sits near the wrist crease. Beside it, a second hand with red painted nails makes the same OK sign against a warm wooden parquet floor.

Nobody in Sallow Wells believed the old man when he said the sign meant all was well, so he stopped saying it and simply made it, every time a lorry came grinding up the Tanner Flats road with its lights on at noon.

The road ran sixty miles without a bend. Drivers who came through there learned to watch the verges for the one thing that never moved: a woman called Ada Vinter, who sat on an upturned crate beside the mile marker with a flask and a tin of boiled sweets. When a lorry passed, she lifted one hand and made a ring with thumb and forefinger, the other three fingers spread like a fan. Most drivers took it for a wave asking for water. Some stopped, and found she had none to give, only a question: had they seen her brother's green van on the far side of the flats?
The tellers said that van had gone past eleven years before, with a spaniel asleep in the passenger seat, and nobody had seen it come out the other end. Ada never argued with the tellers. She only asked each driver to make the sign back at her as they passed, so she would know they had seen her and had not gone blind to the road.
Late one summer a boy in a borrowed cab slowed beside her and, instead of the sign, pressed his palm flat against the window glass. Ada looked at it for a long time. Then he unfolded his own fingers into a ring, slowly, thumb to finger, and she sat back down on the crate, lighter than she had been all year.
