Close-up of a red heart with grey leafy sprigs tattooed on the sole of a bare foot, in a fine line botanical style.

Red heart and leaf sprigs on sole of foot

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bare foot is shown sole-up, resting on a carpet with frayed denim trousers around the ankle. A solid red heart sits at the centre of two grey sprigs of leaves that curve outward along the sole. The leaves are drawn in fine, lightly shaded linework, and the heart is the only area of colour against the grey ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are halfway up the ivy when the stone under your hand gives way, and for a moment the whole north wall of Carrow Keep seems to lean out over the valley to see what you will do. Below, Mrs Pell is shouting about the rope. You have told her twice that the ivy is the only thing holding the old chapel window together, and that pulling it down would bring the arch with it. She does not believe in arches. She believes in ledgers.

The climb is slow because you keep stopping to look. Grey-green sprigs grow from every crack in the mortar, curling outward as if reaching for something on the far side of the gap. Decades ago somebody cut initials into the sill of that window and then, for reasons nobody wrote down, pressed a small heart of red glass into the stone beside them. You have been counting the sprigs around it for three weeks, and the number never comes out the same twice.

At the top you find the glass has loosened, leaving a red-stained hollow among the leaves. You press a thumb into it and it comes away with a crumb of old lichen. Mrs Pell is on the path now, hands on hips, asking what you have found. You tell her nothing yet. Instead you copy the sprigs into your notebook, every one, the way they turn toward the sea, and you leave the hollow blank in the centre like a held breath.

By dusk the page is full of leaves and one empty space, and the wind has started pulling the ivy the other way. You hear the rope go slack below. You do not look down. You are already drawing the heart back in, in red ink, because somebody has to keep the window standing.
