The boat had been gone four days when Maren Holt went down to the slipway with a dab of red sealing wax pressed into her palm, the way her grandmother had taught her to carry anything she meant to give back. The harbourmaster said the Gull's Due would come home on the evening tide or not at all. Old Ada at the chandlery had said the same thing in fewer words, then gone quiet and sorted her twine.

Maren had shaped the wax into a heart the night Tam sailed, working it warm between her thumb and fingers until it held. Her grandmother always said the sea minds what is kept shut and gives back what is opened. So she closed her hand around the heart and kept it closed through the long cold hours, through the bell buoy clanging out past the breakwater, through the gulls arguing over a dead crab on the steps.

The tide turned at dusk. The Gull's Due came round the wall with her sail down and one man at the tiller, and when he lifted his arm to the quay Maren saw his fist was shut too. He stepped onto the stones, knelt on the wet granite, and opened his hand. There was a red smear across his knuckles, warm and soft, and in the centre of it a small dark mark where he had been gripping something all the way home.

Maren opened her own hand. The heart had gone soft and flat in her palm, and when they pressed their two palms together on the slipway the wax stuck, the way the old women said it would, and neither of them let go.
