Butterfly and heart design on the back of a hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black butterfly with curling swirls sits on the back of a hand, with a small heart and a trail of dots running down toward the fingers. The linework is bold and solid, with flat black ink and no shading. The plain background is a leopard-print sleeve and a silver multi-band ring on one finger, which keep the focus on the design.

Mrs Ostrowska had kept the lost property cupboard at Hallam Junction for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had come asking for a butterfly. Umbrellas, yes. Reading glasses by the dozen, a tin of barley sugar, one wedding shoe that the bride's father collected in a rage. But the small black shape that turned up in the tray on Tuesday was nothing she had ever logged, and she turned it over under the desk lamp as if the answer were printed on the back.

It was not a stamp at all. It was a tracing on tissue paper, folded in four, with a heart drawn in one corner and a line of dots running off the edge like a platform number that had lost its platform. Someone had tucked it into the lining of a ticket wallet and left it on the 16:40 to Carlisle. The guard had handed it in with a shrug. Mrs Ostrowska unfolded it carefully, the way her mother had taught her to open letters, and found the same shape again on the inside, larger, the wings spread wide across the paper.
She knew then who had been drawing these. Every Saturday for a year, a young woman with a sketchbook had sat on bench four and copied the departure boards, the curls of the ironwork on the footbridge, the dotted lines of the route map, turning all of it into something softer. Mrs Ostrowska had seen the sketches blowing about the platform and had never once picked one up.
On Saturday she took the tissue to bench four and sat where the girl used to sit. A train pulled out with a long sigh of brakes. She left the paper folded beneath the seat, the dots pointing towards the timetable board, and went home early for once, and did not look back to see who would find it.
