Paired keys and triangles on forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The image shows matching tattoos on two forearms, each with a black-lined ornate skeleton key at the lower centre and a cluster of geometric triangles and a diamond above it. The triangles are filled with soft red, green and grey-black tones, with some drawn as thin black outlines that overlap the colour. The plain black background makes the skin tones and the mirrored layout stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hettie Marsh cut the second key on the Thursday, because the first had come off the vice wrong-handed and she would not waste good brass on a mistake that could still be made to fit. Mr Abernethy had brought the drawing in a flat tin, folded twice, and he spread it across her bench under the gas jet. Two doors, he said, mirrored across a single party wall, and between them a room the shape of a diamond that nobody had yet been allowed to enter.

She worked the bits from his sketch: a triangle inked in soft red for the brick, another in green for the ivy that had crept into the mortar, a black one for the soot that never washed out of Cobb Lane, and thin outlines where the planning men had drawn their hopes and then thought better of them. Both bows were scrolled the same way, but she filed the second key by looking into a hand mirror, so that every ward ran backward against the first. Held side by side, the wards matched like the teeth of a closed jaw.

On the Friday night she carried both keys up Cobb Lane in her coat pocket and tried the left door, then the right. The left turned with a clean click. The right stuck, and when she worked it a board gave under her boot and she stood looking down into the diamond room from the wrong side of a wall she had only ever drawn. Someone had lit a candle in there, and its flame leaned toward her as though it had been waiting for the mirror image of the key to arrive.

She hung both keys on the nail above her bench that night, side by side, and left the triangles wet on the paper so that by morning the colours had bled into one another.
