Paisley and mandala tattoo on a leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A large paisley motif sits at the centre of the image, layered over a scalloped mandala-style border with a spiral at its heart. The design uses bold black outlines, dotted and scrolled linework, and shading in purple, pink, orange and yellow. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a beige carpet and a white wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The block was the size of a bread board, and the pear-shaped curl carved into it had gone soft at the edges from being pressed so many times. My grandmother dipped it in the indigo vat, lifted it out dripping, and made me hold the cloth flat while she counted to nine under her breath. Nine, she always said, was the number the wood liked.

Beyond the last cottage the forest began with birches and then oaks gone black with age, and the dyers' children were forbidden to go past the stile. My cousin Wat went anyway the summer he turned twelve, and came back with his sleeves stained a colour no vat could make: bruise, then rose, then a yellow like the heart of a marigold. He had found a clearing where the ferns grew in spirals, each frond unrolling from a tight coil, with red berries scattered round them like beads on a bridle.

Grandmother would not let him tell it twice. She took the block down from its hook, ran her thumb along the carved curl and said the spiral was not a pattern at all but a door, and that every cloth we printed let a little of the forest out into the village. Nobody believed her except the widows who wore our shawls to funerals, who always came back the next season asking for the same design.

The last shawl I printed, I pressed the block twice on the same corner without thinking. When I lifted it, the curl had doubled inward, two spirals nested like a shell. Grandmother looked at it for a long time, then folded the cloth around my shoulders and told me to carry it past the stile before the frost came. I did. The ferns had already unrolled to meet me.
