Outlined star inside the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small, open-outlined five-pointed star tattooed inside the ear, in black ink. The linework is thin and even, and the star sits in the upper inner area with no shading or fill. Several piercings surround it, including crystal studs, a hoop with a bead, a multi-hoop cartilage piercing and a jewelled star-shaped earring, against bare skin and fine hair.

The logbook at Ravensmoor Hill had a page missing, torn out cleanly along the spine by someone who wanted one faint star off the record. Mara Quill found the gap on her third night of cataloguing, the stub still pressed flat under a tin of Bovril. The entry above it read "Vega, clear, seeing good" and the one below read, in a slanted hand, "Nothing to add."

Her supervisor, old Desmond Cole, claimed he remembered nothing about it. He only shrugged over his tea and said the night assistants of that decade had been bored enough to invent things. But the surviving index card still gave coordinates in Cassiopeia, and Mara sat at the twelve-inch reflector for four nights running until the cloud broke at two in the morning. There it was, a pinprick the size of a sequin, barely brighter than the dark around it.
She drew it on the back of the card in black ink: a five-pointed outline with the centre left open, the way children draw stars in the margins of their exercise books. Beneath it she wrote the time and, because somebody had torn the page out for a reason, a line for whoever came next. "Still there. Keep looking."
In the morning Desmond read the card for a long while. Then he took a biro from his top pocket and wrote his initials beside her drawing, small and unsteady. "Ruth Ashdown and I used to climb up here after the last bus," he said, not quite looking at her. "She swore that star was ours." Mara left him holding the card and went out to close the dome, the shutter grinding shut over a sky that was already going pale.
