Pale blue nails with script tattoos on hands

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two hands rest on a white painted wooden surface, one holding a Rimmel nail polish bottle and both showing matching pale blue glossy nails. A red script word with a rounded outline sits on the inner wrist of the left hand, and a dark grey script word appears on the back of the right hand near the knuckles. The photograph is evenly lit and top-down, with the nail colour and tattoo ink as the main points of focus.

By the time the Mary Ellen cleared the breakwater at Newlyn, you had already scraped the last of the grey off the wheelhouse rail, and Dad was swearing at a tin of paint that had gone thick in the back of the store. You did it anyway, because the bottle had been rolling about in your coat pocket since Penzance and the brush was already loaded.

Fourteen hours out, the bait ran short. Mackerel strips were all that was left in the cold box, pink and slippery, and the crew threaded the hooks with bare hands going numb in the wind. Somebody scrawled BAIT across the bulkhead in red marker as a joke, and by dawn the name had stuck to the whole season. Gulls followed the stern in a ragged white ribbon, screaming as if they had been promised something.

The net came up heavy and silver, more than the whole week's worth. The skipper stood at the rail with his cap crushed in one fist and said nothing for a long minute. Then he laughed, the first time since the engine coughed itself dead off the Scillies, and asked whether the blue paint had been a good idea after all.

You looked at the wheelhouse, its fresh paint already flaking in the spray, and understood that the sea could not be argued with, only coaxed. The bottle slid loose across the deck and fetched up against the scuppers, its colour going the same way as the day.
