Now the harbour had a secret that nobody on the quay would admit to. Behind the breakwater, where the current went lazy, there was a pool the colour of pewter, and in the spring a lotus opened on it, one pointed bud after another, layered like the petals of a clenched fist. My grandfather swore he'd seen it. Everyone laughed at him. He said the bloom turns its face to whichever boat is lost, the way a hungry dog turns to a door.

So the widows walked the wall with a lantern and a pail of the yellow chrysanthemums their gardens grew for funerals, and they tipped them into the black water one by one. Nobody expected anything. Old Mairi Fell, who had lost two sons to that sea, stood at the end of the pier and told the fog exactly what she thought of it.

At first light the Sheila Mae came round the wall, low in the water and singing, and on the pool behind her a single pale lotus had unfolded, its outline bold as a pen stroke. Mairi never once admitted she'd seen it. She just kept the lantern lit every night after that, and the chrysanthemums got a little bigger every year.
