Palm tree and birds above a wave

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single palm tree with a slender curved trunk and drooping fronds sits above a scalloped wave line, with two small birds flying to its left. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the ink is set against warm, reddish skin. The palm and waterline fill the right side of the frame, with sand in the bottom right corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad painted the sea on the back of the Waltzer's canvas the summer I turned nine, and he never once got it to look right to him. He had a pot of Prussian blue, a sign-writer's brush with the bristles worn to a point, and a palm he'd copied from a postcard someone left in the caravan. In every town we pulled into, the canvas went up behind the coconut shy and the kids stood under it for photographs, pretending they'd been somewhere.

The palm was the only part he settled. Two strokes for the trunk, bent like a question mark, then the fronds drooping off it like wet washing. The waves he never managed. He'd scallop them, scrub them out, scallop them again, swearing at the paint for drying too fast in the August heat. Mum said it was the wind off the fields that made the canvas sag, but I knew he was thinking of the real coast, the one we passed on the A-road every October without ever stopping.

The last season we ran, he took me down to the shingle at Mablethorpe after the gates had closed. It was nearly dark. Two gulls came in low over the water and he tipped his head at them the way he did with anything he thought was lucky. "Birds always know where the land is," he said, and I thought he meant that land was where we were headed next. He didn't say anything more. The canvas went up in the loft the following spring, and nobody has ever painted over the palm.
