Palm tree and boat beach scene on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A tall palm tree with dark, detailed fronds dominates the design, with a second palm leaning behind it and a dark rocky island on the left. Below, a weathered wooden boat sits in the foreground on shallow turquoise water, with soft shading and blended greens and blues. The scene is wrapped vertically around the lower leg and shown against a blurred indoor background.

Nobody in Saltmarrow believed Huw Pritchard when he said the old palm on Carreg Island had grown a second trunk overnight. He counted his nets twice and had never told a lie before breakfast, but the village had heard enough from him about the sea to be wary. So on the Sunday after the storm, when the chapel bell stopped, the whole row of them walked the shore road in their good shoes to see for themselves.

Huw had already rowed out at first light in the old clinker boat, tar-patched and grey, to fetch the mooring rope he had left around a rock. The water over the sandbar was so clear that the planking threw its shadow onto the pale sand below. Under the leaning palm the rope hung snagged in a fork of the trunk, stiff with years of salt, and beside it someone had cut a name into the bark: NELL, and under that, 1931.
The villagers gathered at the water's edge and argued. Mrs Hobbs said it was a trick of the tide. The schoolmaster said the palm had always been there and Huw had simply forgotten where he tied his rope. Nobody argued with the carving. Nell Pritchard had taken the ferry to the mainland the autumn she turned eighteen and never written home, and every soul on that sand remembered Huw pacing the harbour wall for a year after.
He came back across the shallows with the rope over his shoulder and said only that the island had been keeping it safe. Then he pushed the boat off and let the tide carry it past the reef. By evening the carving had gone the colour of sand in low sun, and the palms stood on over the water as if they had never been asked to move.
