Palm tree and sunset on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A palm tree, a low orange sun over a dark sea or mountain, and a cluster of green leaves with a pink and orange flower sit inside a red wash on the inner forearm. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in green, orange, red and yellow are typical of the traditional style. Part of a second tattoo, a woman's face with red lips and a patterned band, is visible above the main design against a teal chair.

The palm had come off a ship that never docked again, or so the people of Scarrow Haven said, and it had grown crooked in the lee of the chandlers' wall for as long as anyone could remember. Ada Penhallow watered it with bilge water when the well ran low, and she told the children it would bear coconuts the year the herring came back.

Every evening the boats came round the point with the sun sitting low over the black hump of Carrick Mor, and the old men said the sun was paying them for the day. Ada's brother Tom went out on the Gull with a debt and a bad cough, and he did not come back the night the wind turned. She stood at the wall with a bunch of pink flowers picked from the cliff path and waited for a lamp that did not come.
The next evening the sea lay flat as a plate, and a single boat came in under oars. It was not the Gull. It was a hired boy from Ferrin with a sack of salt fish and a message: Tom had swapped his berth with a stranger on the Brightwater and was sleeping in a cove on the far island, too proud to be seen wet. Ada laughed until she had to sit down on the bollard.
She planted the flowers at the palm's root that night, and by the next spring the tree had put out two green fronds higher than the chandlers' roof. Nobody in Scarrow Haven asked where the coconuts were. They only watched the sun go down in the gap of the headland and counted the boats in.
