Palm trees, beach and galaxy sky on upper arm

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm, showing a sunset sky filled with a glowing spiral galaxy and scattered stars. Tall palm trees, one in dark silhouette, frame a calm sea and a wooden boardwalk leading into the distance at the bottom of the arm. Smooth blended shading gives the sky and water depth, with vivid reds, oranges and pinks against muted greens and greys.

You want the true version or the one the boys at the pier tell? The true one has less rum in it, so I'll give you the one with the rum. Sit down, the bench is damp but it won't bite. Back in the year the Carrow cannery shut, Ada Penhallow kept the bait shed at the end of the boardwalk and swore she could read the sky like a ledger. Every evening she'd climb onto the rail with her tea and say, the galaxy's out again, Mr Teague, the sea's going to behave itself tonight.

Teague never believed her. He was a man who trusted tide tables and nothing with a sparkle in it. But one August a stranger came off the last ferry with a sea chest and a map of stars drawn on the back of a hymn sheet, and he asked Ada for a bed and a boat. She gave him the bed. The boat she charged him for, because that was how she was, and he paid her in a silver compass that didn't point north, only towards whatever he was thinking about.

He took the boat out in the dark, past the palms that lean over the harbour wall like gossips, and he didn't come back for three days. When he did, the compass was still spinning and his hands were burnt red from a sunset he'd sailed straight into. Ada never asked where he'd been. She just pinned the hymn sheet to the bait shed wall, and if you go there now you'll see the spiral of a galaxy drawn in pencil, and a tiny figure at the end of the boardwalk, still walking towards it.
