Three small coloured triangles on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Three small filled triangles sit close together on the upper arm, pointing in slightly different directions. They are coloured orange, pink and grey-blue with clean, even edges. The tattoo is small and placed off-centre on the arm, with a plain pale skin tone and a purple garment at the left of the frame.

The oven timer had gone off twice before Ruth noticed the window had turned from black to the colour of dishwater. Flour on her wrists, she slid the last tray from the rack and counted the tarts by feel. Thirty-six, the chalk board said, and Mr Okonjo's order for the ferry-terminal café wanted every one of them by six.

Three triangles had come out wrong. The apricot one had slumped, the raspberry one had split along its seam, and the blue-grey one, made with the last of the damson jam, had gone dull at the corners where the sugar caught. She could have binned them. Instead she set them on the cooling rack in a loose line and nudged each one with a knife until it pointed a different way, the way the gulls had been pointing over the harbour wall when she walked in at four.

Mr Okonjo came through the back door with his coat still buttoned and the cold on his collar. He looked at the rack for a long time. 'Those are the ones nobody buys,' he said. 'Yes,' said Ruth. 'Put them in the window anyway.' He didn't argue, and that was how she knew he had been waiting for someone to ask him for a small, stupid kindness.

At seven the café sold out of everything except the three odd tarts. A man in a hi-vis jacket bought them one at a time, turning each over as if checking the base, and asked where the apricot one had come from. Ruth wiped her hands on her apron. 'From the batch that nearly didn't happen,' she said, and went back to the dough.
