Paper plane and paper boat on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a forearm with two small outline tattoos: a folded paper plane on the left and a folded paper boat to its right. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the geometric folds are drawn with straight facets. The ink is black on pale skin against a plain light grey background, with the arm running diagonally across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boy on the coconut shy had been folding paper since dinner, and by the time the fair packed up he had a shoebox full of planes and boats that Mum said would end up in the bin before we reached Carlisle. I told him I'd keep one. He said I had to pick the best, so I picked the boat, because it was the one that had sunk twice and still floated.

We were on the road that week with Pemberton's Gallopers, a roundabout, a Waltzer and a tent that smelled of candyfloss and damp canvas. Nobody on the fair ever stayed put long enough to finish anything, so the things we made were always small and folded, things you could carry in a coat pocket. My job was the lights on the Waltzer, which meant I spent most nights up a ladder on a field outside some town I'd forget by morning, bulbs in my teeth, thinking about nothing much.

I kept the boat in my jacket for eleven years. The plane I gave to the boy, who flew it off the top of the wagons at Blackpool and never saw it come down. When I finally had the ink done, I asked for them side by side, the plane heading off the page and the boat staying where it was, because a boat is the thing you keep and a plane is the thing you let go.
