Fine line black tattoo of a paper plane beside the cursive word Wanderlust, placed on the upper back near the shoulder blade.

Paper plane and Wanderlust script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small paper aeroplane outline sits to the left of the cursive word Wanderlust, both drawn in thin, even black linework. The lettering has a loose, handwritten flow and the tattoo is set on smooth skin at the upper back, partly tucked under a grey top and a lace edge. The image is warm toned with the ink standing out clearly against the skin.

Dear Ruth, I found the paper aeroplane in the bottom of my school bag this morning, folded so many times the wings had gone soft as cloth. You wrote on it in purple felt tip during Mr Penhale's lesson on rivers, and I never once threw it, though I threatened to. Do you remember what it said? Go somewhere that isn't here. I laughed at the spelling then and I am not laughing now.

I am writing because the reunion is on Saturday at the Crown in Bideford, and Denise has asked everyone to bring something from their school years for the memory table. I nearly brought the plane. Then I thought of you on the coach to Plymouth with your feet up on the seat in front, and I thought you would hate a glass case full of our old pencils. So I am bringing the plane to you instead, if you will meet me by the harbour wall at ten, before the others arrive and start asking why we never got out.

I did get out, in the end. Eleven years in Lisbon, two in Halifax, a winter in a fishing village where the bread came round on a bicycle. I kept a list of every place I slept, and it runs to three pages now. You would have approved of the handwriting, if not the content.

Bring your reading glasses. The wind off the estuary takes everything, and I want you to see what the words say when you hold them up to the light.
