Your mother rang to say the flight is at six, so I am writing this tonight while the kettle does its best. You will not read it until you are somewhere with a window seat and nobody to argue with, which is the only time I ever managed to say anything sensible to your grandfather.

When he was twenty he took the train from Hull to Lisbon with one suitcase and a bag of boiled sweets, and he sent me postcards that all said the same thing: the sea is bigger here. I kept every one in a biscuit tin under the stairs. He never came back for the tin, and he never came back for me either, not really, though he came back to the house often enough to fix the gutter.

So here is my advice, and it is only one thing. Keep going round. Do not promise you will be home by a certain day. Take the cheap seat by the wing, eat the strange bread, and when you get lost, note the time and the name of the street, because one day you will want to write it down for someone.

There is a spare key on the hook by the back door. It opens nothing you need. Take it anyway.
