Matching sisters heart tattoos on three feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Three bare feet rest on a wooden floor, each with a similar black tattoo of an openwork heart filled with curling swirls, with the word Sisters written in script across the centre. The linework is bold and dark, with the shading kept to solid black ink and no colour. The feet are arranged side by side in the frame, with denim jeans visible at the top edge and painted toenails on all three feet.

Mam kept the pattern book in a biscuit tin under the stairs, the one with a heart on its cover worked in pale thread, and nobody was allowed to take it out except on a Sunday. Ada was the first to lift it. She was eleven and had already learned that the swirls had to curl back and close on themselves before the heart could hold anything at all.

Our Nell said the heart was for lovers, and Ada said it was for bread, because a heart with holes in it lets the crumbs through, which was the sort of thing Ada said. Between them they filled the parlour with bobbins clicking like a clock that could not make up its mind. I sat on the bottom stair and counted pins and nobody thought to ask me what I would make.
The winter the mill shut, Mam sold the loom and kept the book. We sat round the table under the lamp, the three of us working the same heart, each in her own thread. When we were done Ada laid hers on the sill and said the word had to run across the middle, so none of us could pull away without tearing the whole thing. Nell stitched SISTERS through the centre so fine you had to hold it to the window to read it.
Forty years on the tin has gone to a jumble sale, but the three squares of lace are pressed flat between the pages of my own Bible. When the frost comes I take them out and see the swirls still closing on themselves, every one of them, the way Ada taught me.
