Pastel cat dagger with heart guard on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A dagger design runs down the forearm, with a white cat head with large turquoise eyes and a gold star on its forehead at the top. The heart-shaped guard and blade are outlined in bold black linework, with beaded dots, rainbow-shaded crescent moons, sparkling white stars and small diamonds filling the surrounding space. The palette is pastel pink, purple, turquoise and yellow, with soft shading and a stippled texture in the heart.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mistress Ottoline had been sitting on the dagger for three days, and nobody in the palace of Pellucidia had the nerve to lift her off. The blade lay on a velvet cushion in the Hall of Small Hours, its heart-shaped guard flushing pink where the morning light came through the lattice. Tilde, the armourer's girl, had been sent to fetch it before the coronation, and she found the cat's star-marked brow tipped towards her with plain disapproval.

"It was forged for the Queen's grandmother," said the Lord Chancellor from the doorway, twisting one end of his moustache. "Crescent moons on the quillons, stippled hearts for the grip. It cannot be mislaid." Tilde knew the palace gossip. The metal had come from a star that fell into the mill pond the winter the old king was born, and the smith who hammered it had cried so hard into the forge that the moons came out lopsided, one lilac and one turquoise, and the court had never agreed which was the proper pair.

She knelt beside the cushion, held out a flat hand and told the cat the truth: that a crown wanted a blade, and a blade wanted a keeper who could be trusted with it. Ottoline opened her enormous turquoise eyes, considered this for a long while, then stood and stretched until her tail curled like a rainbow ribbon. Underneath her, the cushion kept the small pattern of pearled dots the guard had pressed into it.

Tilde lifted the dagger by its diamond-studded hilt and carried it out through the lattice, where the Chancellor was already complaining about the draught. The cat trotted after her as far as the sundial, then sat down to watch the procession form. At noon the blade rode in the Queen's hands above the crowd, sparkling like something that had recently been a star. Only Ottoline noticed the chip on the point, and she had already decided that by spring it would be hers again.
