Pastel rocket and crescent moon on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style rocket with a teal body, pink heart, yellow stripe and pink flame sits at the centre of the design, with a yellow crescent moon, small green planets, a ringed planet and white sparkles around it. The bold black outlines and smooth, solid fills give it a clean, graphic look, with soft shading on the rocket body. The pastel palette is set against a pale lilac background on the skin, and the design sits vertically along the forearm.

Right, sit up where I can see you, because the ward is quiet now and a story goes better in the quiet. Nurse Dilys had the night desk the winter the boiler died, and she kept a tin of boiled sweets in the drawer for anyone who could not sleep. There was a girl in bed nine that week, eight years old, who had a rocket drawn on a paper napkin and would not let anyone take it off her.

The rocket was teal, the colour of the sea off the pier at Rhyl, with a pink heart painted on its belly and a yellow stripe round its middle like a cricket jumper. It had a pink flame at the bottom that the girl said was strawberry jam, and a little ringed planet tucked at its tail, which she insisted was for the rocket's supper. Every night after the tea trolley she told Dilys the rocket was going to fetch the moon, the proper yellow one, the crescent, because the moon had a bite out of it and somebody ought to go and see who did it.
Dilys said the moon was too far for a paper rocket. The girl said it did not have to be a real rocket, only a brave one, and brave things get there anyway. So on the last night the boiler was still broken, when the corridor lights flickered, Dilys wheeled her to the window at the end of the ward, where the sky over the car park was lilac with sodium light. The girl drew the rocket on the cold glass with one finger, the glass fogged, and when the fog cleared there were little white stars where she had breathed on them.
The boiler came back on the Tuesday and the girl went home on the Thursday. I have never once seen a crescent moon since without looking for a rocket going round it. Now lie down. Your own rocket is only a dream, and dreams go faster than anything with fuel in it.
