Powerpuff Girls on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Three cartoon characters from The Powerpuff Girls are drawn across the upper arm: Blossom with red hair bows at the top, Bubbles with blonde pigtails in the middle, and Buttercup with black hair at the upper right, with Bubbles also at the lower left. The characters are rendered with thick black outlines, flat fills and simple white highlights. Bright blue, green, yellow and pink shapes sit behind the figures, and the design wraps around the arm.

Mind the windfalls, they bruise your feet worse than your pride. Now, where was I? Ah, the three girls over Harrow Vale, the summer the early apples came in and the wasps went mad for them.

Rosie Calloway had red ribbons in her hair, big as a pair of mudlark's hands, and she wore them so you could see her coming from the next county. Honey Dunmore had yellow plaits that stuck out like the handles of a milk churn, and she could fly on them if she was cross enough. The third was Nell, black-haired and sharp, who never once in her life said please and never once needed to. They were the orchard's wardens, paid in windfalls and the odd sugared bun from the vicar's wife.

One August the blight came up out of the river fog and started turning the Bramleys grey. The farmer, old Tobias Crane, sat on his gate with his pipe gone cold and wept like a boy. So the three of them went up at dusk, through that blue hour when the sky goes flat as a painted board, and they hung above the rows like kites that had forgotten their string.

They worked all night. Rosie blew the fog back to the river with her ribbons, Honey sang the rot out of the stalks, and Nell simply stared the canker down until it curled up and died of embarrassment. By morning the trees stood green and loud with wasps.

Tobias came out with his basket and found three small sticky handprints on his gate, one red, one gold, one black. He left them there. He said the apples tasted of thunder for a month.
