Geometric cat head with triangles on a leg

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's face is drawn in black ink with fine stippled dotwork shading, giving the fur a textured look. Overlapping outlined triangles extend behind and around the head, creating a geometric frame. The design is shown in close view on a bare leg against a dark, blurred background.

Dear Tom,

The col has been a mess since Tuesday. Mr Okafor from the council sent up two chainmen who spent a whole morning arguing over whether the bearing from the cairn ran true, and I had to walk down to the hut for the spare tripod legs. The cat was waiting at the hut door as if someone had told it we were coming. Grey, with a white bib and eyes like wet slate. Mr Okafor calls it the Assessor. I call it nothing, because it never comes when called.

Every morning since, it has walked out ahead of us along the ridge and sat down on exactly the spot where the sightline should cross the next peak. Not near it. On it. The first time I thought it was chance. The third time I took the bearing from its tail, sitting square on the stone, and the figures came out clean for once, three lines meeting at a point no bigger than a grain of rice.

We finished the triangulation yesterday. The cat watched us fold the theodolite into its box, then stretched, climbed onto the lid and went to sleep while the mist rolled in off the water. I am writing this at the hut with the lamp lit and the cat on the windowsill, licking one paw as though it were drawing lines on the dark glass.

Tell Mum I will be home for her birthday. Tell her the cat is not mine.
