Tabby cat portrait with leaves on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a tabby cat's head turned slightly to one side, with green eyes, a pink nose and dark forehead stripes. A sprig of olive-coloured leaves with black outlines curves beneath and behind the face. The cat is shaded in greys and browns with bold black outlines, and the leaves are filled with muted ochre, set against pale skin and a light background.

Mrs Hollis had the last of the post sorted by half four, and the cat was already on the counter, sitting on the rubber stamp as if someone had placed him there for a joke. Tabby, she called him, because she had no imagination after forty years of selling stamps in Thornley, and because he came with the shop. Nobody knew whose he was. He kept the back room free of mice and the front step free of the Dawson boys' football.

Old Mr Ferris from the allotments came in every Thursday for a tin of pilchards and a bag of sage he said he didn't need. The cat would turn his head slowly toward the bell over the door, green eyes narrowing, the way he did for anyone he had decided was worth a look. He had decided about Ferris years ago. Ferris always left a sprig of bay on the counter by the till, and nobody asked why.

The Thursday Ferris didn't come, the cat sat in the window all afternoon, pressed to the glass and watching the lane. Mrs Hollis locked up at six and found him still there. She scooped him up under one arm and set off through the rain past the allotments, and at the gate she felt him wriggle free. He went straight up the path to the shed, where its door stood open and a lamp was lit. Ferris sat among drying bay leaves and seed trays with a kettle on the ring. The cat put his front paws on the bench, looked the old man over the way he looked at anyone worth the trouble, and Ferris laughed for the first time in a week.
