Paw print design with coloured toe accents
Mixed · Flash
A bold black paw print with four toe pads and a larger main pad, drawn as a flat design on white paper. The toe pads contain stylised cut-out shapes, and the main pad has a curved inner swirl. Small areas of grey, green, blue and red fill sit inside the pads against the otherwise black linework.

Dear Nell, you will think me soft, but I have given up trying to keep Bramble off the sands before seven. The boarders complain of him at breakfast, yet every morning the same prints run from the back gate to the tideline, four toes and a great round heel, and every morning they reach a little further out than the day before.

Mr Okonedo in number four says the colours are paint from the pier rail, that the decorator left his tins unlidded all August, and that a dog will walk through anything. I told him the grey toe matched the slate of the harbour wall, the green the lichen on the groyne, the blue the shutters of the chandler's, and the red the buoy that broke loose in March. He laughed and asked why the red was on the far toe only. I had no answer for him.
Last Tuesday the tide turned while the fog still sat on the water. I went down with the lantern and found the prints walking out, not in, and no sign of Bramble on the sand beyond them. There was only the heel mark, pressed deep, as if something had stood a long while looking back at the town.
He came up the lane at noon, dripping and smug, and lay on the mat as though he had never been away. I have stopped asking. The boarders have a new rule about the gate, and I keep a jar of the grey paint on the windowsill, which I cannot bring myself to throw out. Write soon, and tell me whether the shutters in Leeds have been painted yet. Your loving sister, Ada.
