Paw print on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A paw print tattoo sits on the outer upper arm, with a single peach toned paw above the larger shaded pads. The pads are filled with soft blue, purple and pink shading that fades into the skin, with white highlights and dark outlines around some edges. The composition is centred on the arm, with the paw placed on top of the pad cluster.

Sit closer, the fire's nearly gone and the night is long on this side of the river. You want to hear about the cat that walked the wet streets of Halsey Row, the one with the peach-coloured forepaw? Everyone in the old wards knew her, though nobody owned her. She came and went through the coal hatches and the gaps under the chapel doors, and she never once stepped in a puddle without leaving a mark.

Her marks were strange. Where she trod on the cobbles after rain, the stones kept a print that glowed, faint blue at the heel and violet at the toes, the colour of gaslight through cheap glass. Old Mrs Pennock swore the cat was counting the streets. Every print she left, a lamp went out somewhere in the city, and in the morning someone found a window where a candle had been lit for them.

One February a boy called Tobias Greave came down Halsey Row with no shoes and no coin, looking for the pale cat. He had lost his mother to the fever ward and wanted a light in his room that would not go out. He followed the glowing prints across three bridges and past the dead clockworks, until the last one stopped at the step where he had been sleeping for a month.

The cat sat on the top step and washed her paw. The boy went inside, struck his last match on the stove, and slept with the door open so the prints could find him. By dawn they had faded, as they always do. Walk Halsey Row on a wet night with your eyes low and you may still find one, blue at the heel, and a warm step waiting beside it.
