Paw print with heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a paw print sits on the inner wrist, with a heart drawn inside the large central pad. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photo is close and cropped at the hand and forearm, with a silver metal watch strap and a cream knitted sleeve visible below the tattoo.

Nell found the collie at the pit gate before the whistle, sitting bolt upright on the cinder track with his nose to the wind. His name was Brock and he belonged to nobody in particular, though the whole of Hollin Row fed him scraps. Every shift he walked down the hill to the lamp room and waited there, the way a man waits for a late train.

Nobody had asked him to. Since the roof came in at the Low Seam in March he had not missed a morning, and the men had stopped shooing him off. Nell brought him heel bread wrapped in a tea towel. He took it gently, the way he took everything, then went back to watching the cage wheel turn over the shaft.
On the eleventh morning the cage came up with the day shift, grey-faced and quiet. Her uncle lifted his cap to her as he passed. Davy Pickup came last, the lamp-boy who had been trapped with the others and carried out on a board, and when his boots touched the cinders Brock stopped sitting and simply ran, skidding, nails scraping the ash.
Nell watched him lay his head on the boy's knee and not move. Afterwards, when the men had gone home and the day had cooled, she went back to the gate and found the marks he had left in the wet grey: a row of small paws, each with a neat heart pressed into the largest pad, as if he had wanted to leave something behind that the rain could not wash away.
