Blue hamsa hand on a wrist
Other · Colour · Photo
A single hamsa hand motif sits on the wrist, filled with intricate scrollwork, paisley-like curls and floral detailing in solid blue ink. The linework is bold and even, with the fine interior patterns standing out against the solid outline. The pale, softly lit bedsheet behind the hand keeps the focus on the tattoo.

She stood at the kitchen window of the net loft with a flour sack of mended twine across her shoulder and counted the masts. Eleven. Twelve, if you counted the little dinghy her father had built from driftwood and never named.

The old women of Sandvik said a hand painted on a door would keep the sea from taking what was inside. Her grandmother had painted five on the boathouse before the war, each one a different blue, each one scrolled and curled like frost on a pane. Marta had asked once why the fingers were so many and so thin. Her grandmother said the fingers were for counting, and the eye in the palm was for the things you could not count. Marta had thought that a poor answer. She thought it less poor now.
Oskar came round the breakwater at dusk with the engine coughing and one net torn open like a sleeve. He did not wave. He lifted his hand from the tiller, palm flat, fingers spread, the way the old men did when a boat came home whole. Marta went down the slipway with the twine still on her shoulder and held up her own hand to meet him. Behind them the cracked bell rang once, badly, and for the first time in years it sounded like a welcome.
