Small black fine line triskelion tattoo on the inner wrist, with woven bracelets worn on the same arm.

Triskelion on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand shows a small triskelion of three interlocking spirals in black ink on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with the spirals filled in solid black at their centres. The background is a dim collage of printed photographs, and the wrist is lit by a warm, low light.

Dear Nell,

The big wheel jammed again at Hexham, halfway up with three cars of screaming children, and Dad had to climb the spindle in his good boots to free the bearing. I'm writing this on the back of a spare ticket roll because the caravan table is still damp from the rain. You'll laugh, but I've done the thing you dared me to. Tomorrow, before we pull out for Carlisle, Dougie from the coconut shy is going to put a small three-spiral sign on the inside of my wrist, the one he says he copied from a pattern book he found in a dead man's trunk.

Gran used to tell us it was the old Manx sign, three bent legs running round a centre so no one could say which one was first. She said it kept you moving and kept you from falling, which was more than she could say for the rest of us. I told Dad I wanted it, and he didn't say a word for a whole minute. Then he went to the back of the lorry and came out with the paraffin lamp and a sheet of tracing paper, and he drew the three spirals over and over, rubbing out the ends until they fitted together like the spokes of the wheel.

I didn't tell him this, but I think he was pleased. He's never once talked about Gran's kitchen, only about the rides, and this morning he tapped the tracing and said, that's how it turns when it's working right. Then he went back to the bearing.

I'll send a photo when it's healed. The bracelets the girls from the waltzer gave me are still on the other wrist, and the lamp's on, and the field's dark except for the wheel. Write back soon. Tell me if Mum's still angry about the money.

Love, Jo
