You will find this on the hall table when you come back from the rehearsal, so I'll keep it short before your mother starts fussing with the flowers. The path from the lychgate to the church door was relaid on Tuesday, and Mr Okafor from the stonemason's said it needed a day to set. Pilot had other ideas. He walked straight across it at six this morning, the way he does everything, as if the ground had been laid down for his benefit.

Mr Okafor was not amused, and I confess I was cross with the dog for a whole minute before I saw the prints. Four toes and a big pad, pressed clean into the grey. In the middle of the main pad, where the stone was still soft, a leaf had lain there overnight and lifted away, leaving a small pale heart about the size of a plum stone. Nobody could have planned it. Mr Okafor said he would cut the slab out and relay it, then he looked at the heart for a long time and said he would not.

So the path stays as it is. The vicar has agreed to walk you over it in your good shoes, and I told him to mind the third step, which is where the dog always sat to wait for me. You will see the prints on the way up. Look down once, then look up at Tom, because he will be doing the same thing and pretending he isn't.
